Funny old world part 483

Socially acceptable reasons not to fly on holiday:

being afraid of the plane crashing (probability – v. low indeed).

Reasons not to fly on holiday that make people look at you as if you have three heads:

being afraid it’ll f*ck up our climate even further (probability – pretty much definite, according to anyone with any scientific credibility).

——-

Socially acceptable reasons to be choosy about what and where you eat:

religion, squeamishness, mad faddy diets.

Reasons to be choosy about what and where you eat that make people look at you as if you have three heads:

not thinking chickens or pigs should be incarcerated, preferring vegetables that don’t destroy the earth they’re grown in or require lashings of fossil fuel to get them from a seed in a field to a vegetable on your plate, quite wanting your grandchildren to be able to have a go at using the planet too.

——-

Funny old world.

yep, my MIL wouldnt accept my reasoning for not flying to a family wedding. so i jst told her that i was petrified (well thats kind of true, but if it wasnt so environmentally damaging i would probably suck it up)

i tell people that environmentalism is my religion. doesnt help though! i think being green is still seen as a hobby. grrr.

I can’t be doing with flying anymore. Even if it were not an environmental disaster the whole airport horror is enough to stop me.

Rob Hopkins, Transition Handbook

“Environmentalists have often been guilty of presenting people with a mental image of the world’s least desirable holiday destination – some seedy bed and breakfast near Torquay, with nylon sheets, cold tea and soggy toast – and expecting them to get excited about the prospect of NOT going there. The logic and the psychology are all wrong.”

Barbara Kingsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

"Food is that rare moral arena in which the ethical choice is generally the one more likely to make you groan with pleasure."

Carlo Petrini

"A gastronome who is not also an environmentalist is an idiot. An environmentalist who is not also a gastronome is, well, sad."

Sharon Astyk

"I am, of course, firmly opposed to consumerism and corporatism in all its forms, and I believe that we are deeply confused about material needs and wants. Now let me explain how books and yarn are totally different than the material things that other people want ;-)…."

Raj Patel, at Slow Food Nation

"Biofuels, which is the preposterous policy that we should grow food not to eat it but to set it on fire."
